Quintessential neighborhood gathering spot

The General Greene opens up

Located at 229 DeKalb Avenue, in the heart of Brooklyn’s Ft. Greene, The General Greene opened on July 1st, 2008. Owned and operated by New York pastry chef, Nicholas Morgenstern, The General Greene is a quintessential neighborhood gathering place serving high-quality American comfort foods and a great list of handcrafted, classic-minded cocktails.

Seizing the opportunity to fill a void for Ft. Greene foodies, Morgenstern is satisfying a personal desire to broaden his culinary reach to create a full-service restaurant. The well-rounded menu of a la carte small plates is designed for sharing and was created by Morgenstern and consulting Chef Ryan Skeen of Resto fame. The dining room’s breezy atmosphere offers a farmhouse-fresh twist on a traditional American diner with whitewashed woods and vintage tractor seats which pull up to a simple butcher-block topped bar. Simply prepared, satisfying standbys include dishes such as Crispy Chicken w/ Fennel, Sweet Corn, & Tarragon $10;Grilled Hangar w/ Smoked Garlic & Parsley $11; Salt & Pepper Roasted Pork Ribs w/ Sweet & Sour Tomato Chutney $10. The beverage menu offers cocktails such as The General’s Gin Cup $10, an American-focused wine list, and a selection of local craft beers available on draft -including brews from Captain Lawrence of Pleasantville, NY.Upon opening, The General Greene will offer dinner service and bar snack menu designed to satisfy imbibing snackers and lingering diners alike.

In the coming months, The General Greene will become the friendly neighborhood anchor to fulfill the dining needs of both locals and visitors -serving breakfast, brunch and lunch. Short-term plans include an outdoor ice cream cart (serving Morgenstern’s homemade ice creams), as well as a full brunch service (including homemade pastries both savory and sweet by Morgenstern and coffee by Counter Culture Roasters). Breakfast will soon follow with a short-list menu of homemade pastries and simple breakfast sandwiches for morning take-out and local coffee-vores. The General Greene will be open Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5pm to 11pm; Thursday from 5pm – 12am, Friday and Saturday from 5pm – 1am.

They will be closed on Mondays. The phone number is 718-222-1510, and they do accept reservations at the communal table for parties of 6 or more.
